“Support Breastfeeding for a Healthier Planet.”
That is this year’s World Breastfeeding Week theme. World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and galvanize action on themes related to breastfeeding. WBW has been celebrated every year the week of August 1- August 7th since 1992.
Around the world, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network of individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding, will celebrate ways in which breastfeeding benefits the planet. The four main objectives for 2020 are: Inform, Anchor, Engage, and Galvanise.
Inform.
Educating society with the benefits between breastfeeding and the environment, by sharing statistics and studies. Showing the link between steps to a healthier planet by breastfeeding contribution.
Anchor.
One definition of “anchor” is a reliable or principal support. During WBW, an effort to secure how breastfeeding is a climate smart decision for the world.
Engage.
By engaging with organizations around the world, WBW can make a bigger impact, and reach millions globally.
Galvanize.
Exciting communities into taking action locally. One way this is being celebrated is by global and local latch ons. Each year, participants around the globe synchronously feed a little one with breast milk. Be it by breast, by chest, by bottle, by tube, or by cup. This year, the Global Big Latch On 2020 will be held virtually on August 1st and 2nd.
Visiting your local breastfeeding organizations for support and resources are one way to gain support and knowledge during your breastfeeding journey. When one feels fully supported, and has knowledge of what goes on in the body and baby when nursing, they are setting themselves up for breastfeeding success. Southern Nevada Breastfeeding Coalition is a local non-profit organization whose members are lactation professionals in the community, ready to support you. Additionally, Vegas Family Doulas’ Infant Feeding Specialist will assist in your walk with feeding your baby throughout the first year. From breast to bottle, and from solids to weaning, VFD has you covered.
