As postpartum doulas when explaining the nature of what we do, we often hear:

“Oh, how I could have used you!”

“I thought postpartum meant depression.”

“Wow, I didn’t know that postpartum doulas existed!”

These statements give us, doulas, mixed emotions. On one hand…Yes! There definitely is a need for what we do! And on the other hand…Darn, there is still so much work to do to educate the masses. Postpartum doesn’t mean depression, it means “after birth”, literally. Therefore, postpartum doulas are after-birth support. And while some view the work of a postpartum doula as a glorified babysitter or housekeeper, Doulas know this job to be the best kept secret!

Postpartum doulas aren’t therapists or advocates, they are guides to help guide one through the interesting time that is postpartum period. They are confidants that you can trust and open up to without worry of judgement. They can take the stresses of everyday household worry off the table. Postpartum doulas gain pleasure from watching their clients thrive in their postpartum realities. Your relaxation, your confidence, your look of appreciation, are what we strive for.

You are NOT alone! There IS support. If you feel overwhelmed or not quite yourself, please reach out!
